When I was seven years old I wanted to be Edmund Hilary. I’d seen a documentary about him and his Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, conquering Mount Everest.
Read more: Dreams and DesiresI was a climber from the moment I could walk and it was not unusual for my parents to catch me on top of the water tanks, hanging out of the tallest tree or to hear me clomping across the roof.
Wanting to emulate my hero I climbed onto the roof of our farmhouse, tied a rope to the top and started descending down the other side. Unfortunately, my rope tying skills were not as good as my climbing ability and I fell, breaking my elbow in the process.
As children we often say, “when I grow up I want to be …” articulating dreams and desires that seemed perfectly reasonable and attainable. But as we get older we can become bogged down in the day to day reality of life and lose sight of our passions and the things we dreamed of being or doing.
My hubby and our dog are currently on a roadtrip around the bottom half of Australia, something that has been on our bucket list and when I saw this display of post it note declarations in a coffee shop window in the small town of Nannup in WA I was reminded of how important it is to never stop dreaming and to embrace life. Writing and publishing my books is one of those things I have always wanted to do and I feel lucky to be able to achieve that but I also enjoyed being given an insight into the many things random strangers want to do before they die. This includes finding love, writing books, travelling, having a family and even riding a rollercoaster.
The iconic Baz Luhrmann said, “A life lived in fear…. is a life half-lived.” It’s something I’ll hold onto as I continue to hone my skills as a storyteller and as we explore this beautiful country we call home. I’d love to know the one thing you want to do in this lifetime, before it’s too late.

I’ve got goosebumps! I love this concept, and I love even more how it stops us in our tracks to stop and breath…and think. I have written stories from a small child. And, as you know, I continue to this day. I’ve learnt knitting, crocheting, baking, gardening, pottery…I ‘master’ a new hobby but soon become bored…or dare I say unfulfilled and always come back to writing. It certainly is my passion and my dream is to one day become an author.
But, to answer your question…
One day I was shopping with my Pop and came across a glass blower creating something beautiful. I was mesmerised and that’s what I told people I wanted to be when I grew up. I wasn’t met with the most positive responses. Most people looked at me weirdly and shrugged, something I was used to because I usually ignored the outside world and buried my head in a book or notepad. My parents recently took me to a warehouse near the depot markets in Canberra where they hold glass blowing classes so maybe one day….
Thank you for sharing that. I can’t wait for your novel and to see if do go to those classes. ❤️
